Blockchain Explorers: An overview

Transparency in blockchain technology is emphasised by immutable and public transaction records. To scour these records, users can use block explorers to browse transactions and blocks. Block explorers can provide valuable information such as the value of the asset's a wallet holds or how much crypto is sent in a transaction.

Etherscan

Etherscan is a blockchain explorer for the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to easily browse transactions. Etherscan can provide comprehensive information regarding transactions and blocks such as timestamps, transaction hashes and sender and receiver addresses. This makes Etherscan a useful tool uncovering information on the Ethereum blockchain.

Users can search Etherscan by address, transaction hash, block number and more

By inputting and searching a valid address, a user should be presented with this page

Searching an Ethereum address will bring up an Etherscan page with information

  1. Ethereum balance an address holds as well as the equivalent fiat value at the current Ethereum price

  2. The dollar value of the tokens that the address holds excluding Ethereum e.g. WETH, Pepe etc

  3. The address that first funded the wallet, with the transaction hash

  4. Entire portfolio value across all EVM networks including Ethereum

A transaction hash is a unique transaction identification string that is created when a transaction is executed

Information regarding executed transaction

  1. The unique transaction hash with the timestamp of when the transaction was successfully executed

  2. The addresses of the sender and receiver

  3. The Ethereum value of the transaction and gas price cost to execute the transaction
