What are Passkeys?

Passkeys offer a safe and secure way to log into your account that eliminates the need for passwords or seed phrases. Supported by some of the biggest tech companies in the world, passkeys allow you to sign in to a website or app using biometric sensors, such as a fingerprint, facial recognition, or a PIN.

How Do Passkeys Work?

  1. Device-Based Authentication: When you create a passkey, it is stored on your device, such as your smartphone, tablet, or computer in a Secure Enclave.

  2. Biometric Verification: To log in, you use a biometric method like fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or a PIN.

  3. Public and Private Keys: Passkeys use cryptographic keys. The private key stays on your device and a corresponding public key is stored with the service you are logging in to. Only your device with the private key can verify your identity.

  4. Secure and Convenient: Since passkeys rely on your device and biometrics, they are much harder to steal than traditional passwords. They only work for the specific domain they are created for so can't be phished.

Benefits of Using Passkeys

  1. Enhanced Security: Passkeys eliminate the risk of password theft and phishing attacks. Only your device can provide the correct private key, making unauthorised access extremely difficult.

  2. Convenience: No more remembering or typing complex passwords. Just use your fingerprint, face, or a simple PIN to log in quickly.

  3. Reduced Friction: With passkeys, the login process becomes smoother and faster, improving your overall user experience.
